yoga mat run down: links to make you glow

glowing yoga practice in our raja shorts and
 popeye tee

at the beginning of the week a friend turned to me and said “your skin is glowing! What are you doing?” she was a colleague from my previous life in the world of beauty editorial and I racked my brain pondering my skin care regime. It was only after she left that I realized that the big change was I had upped my yoga practice. Without wanting to sound like an advert for glow yoga, I feel like I’m a shinier happier person too!  It’s a radiance we spot in a lot of our we’ar family, from our yogi and yogini models to those of you who walk through the doors of our boutiques in bali and cross street! Its hard not to glow with joy in our popping shades of tangerine, or our hooray for summer kaftans! so this week it seemed only fair to devote the yoga mat rundown to all things glowing...

RIO+20 summit

20 years on from the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janiero, Brazil, government representatives will meet at a ‘Rio+20’ summit to discuss sustainable development. The "Rio Connection" campaign across the United Kingdom brings local government together with the public for events to encourage support for the Rio Declaration, which supports the transition to a fairer and greener economy...

this video made us at WE'AR happy! by reflecting on progress and positivity rather than the negative aspects of the issue, what a great way to get excited about the Earth Summit in Rio and perhaps think of ways we can band together for positive change for the future...

we'ar snuggly and warm in our bamboo cocoonlets.

this week auckland hq has been hit with a bit of a chill so we have been raiding the boxes of soon to arrive winter samples in order to keep warm!  the knit dress, new to store warm socks and cinnamon julep have all been on heavy rotation, and the metropolis hoodie pulled out for the morning run! Its also the time of year that we’ar auckland regulars are off on their trips overseas, stopping in store for a little india dress or a pair of how short shorts to recline on some sunny beach in! so it seemed totally natural that this weeks yoga mat run down be dedicated to all things warm...

habitat for humanity 2012: belinda nash

Habitat for Humanity helps projects both locally and abroad, and this year WE'AR is proud to support Belinda Nash in promoting her 'Reconciliation Build' team to get to Sri Lanka and build their Whare Toa - to unite Sinhalese, Tamil and Muslim communities in one village. This August, 300 Kiwis and people from around the world are descending on Sri Lankan shores to make a tiny but significant contribution to world peace...

Sri Lanka’s population has been decimated after three decades of civil struggle and natural disasters, including the devastating 2004 tsunami. Today, more than 300,000 people still live day-to-day without any home to go to.
Belinda and the Reconciliation Build team are holding a fundraiser on May 17th at the Nathan Club Auckland to help raise money for building supplies needed to construct 24 new homes. So your $15 can buy you a night of fun with great kiwi music, a few wines and a silent auction with some great prizes!
WE'AR love the passion and inspiring message Belinda is sending with the plan to build one house with one family to unite a community - check out her touching and charismatic blog iheartprocrastination - too cute!

you can buy tickets to the 'building houses, building hope' fundraiser at iTICKET, or make a donation through Habitat for Humanity here - Belinda needs $5000 dollars to get to Sri Lanka and WE'AR looking forward to hearing all about the amazing experience... visit the facebook page for more updates x x x

WE'AR out and about: fair trade breakfast

this morning the WE'AR team made their way down to Britomart Country Club for the Fairtrade Breakfast supported by Oxfam, a sustainable event to kick off Fairtrade Fortnight... it was a crisp but beautiful sunny morning to enjoy some fair trade goodies and support our peers in the industry committed to fair trade for all!

anya and maria head down to britomart - thanks Thomas for the paparazzi shots!
anya wears her cinnamon julep jacket with knit lace dress, and maria is road testing our winter '12 kulu wrap with snuggle scarf x x x

a few snaps of the event down at BCC this morning. cheers Thomas for being such a dapper chaperone and photographer for the morning!

mmm enjoying our breakfast treats and warm drinks on a chilly Autumnal morning... although the unlimited hot chocolate proved to be a little too tempting!

there was a great turnout to the event, and although we missed emcee Te Radar, we were delighted to be greeted with a solid gift bag with a copy of Good magazine, Cadbury's chocolate and more! enjoying a delicious breakfast of bircher muesli, bananas care of All Good Bananas and over indulging in many a hot chocolate from kokako (all delivered in a handy recyclable tray) was the perfect way to start a fortnight of fair trade discussion and events.

we were happy to see some friends of WE'AR like the lovely ladies from Gather & Hunt and  Rebekah from Good Magazine, as well as representatives from the Auckland City Council and the Sustainable Business Network... WE'AR proud to support events like these for bringing attention to fair trade practice, and with such an awesome turnout we are sure to see some positive action toward making Auckland a Fair Trade City...

would love to keep up to date with whats happening with the Auckland Council and Fair Trade Announcement? WE'AR will have the info as it happens, keep posted with facebook and twitter... many thanks to Oxfam and Fair Trade for putting together such a great event! want to see more? click here to view more pics from this great event.

WE'AR on the Eco Runway in Canterbury

Eco Runway is the first of three events to take part in Waste Watchers' Week - an initiative to launch the University of Canterbury waste education programme.  The Eco fashion show (organized by the wonderful Alicia Sudden) is also collaborating with the Design and Arts College, who, after losing their building to the Feb 2011 quake are more than happy to take part in this exciting event.

WE'AR will be one of the sustainable nz fashion brands hitting the runway, along with Starfish, Miranda Brown, Standard Issue and many more.  Not only will the Eco Runway show designer collections, there will also be a number of charity stores such as the Salvation Army showing - proving recycled fashion can be chic too!

Food and beverages will be provided by local organic and carbon zero companies such as Moveable Feasts and Greenman thoroughout the night (yum!) and everything down to the catwalk is sourced with sustainability in mind.

It sounds like Eco Runway will be the perfect event to show our beautiful clothes, with a focus on our dedication to sustainability and conscious fashionabiltiy! watch this space for pics and updates of the event... we'ar will keep you posted on facebook and twitter with all the news...

WE'AR at New Zealand Fashion Festival 2012

WE'AR showed at 2012 New Zealand Fashion Festival in the day one collections along with Starfish, Moochi, Coop and Salasai. WE'AR offered a taste of winter lavishness with layered up goodness and knitted delights fresh from our ethical production operation in bali. Cotton, rayon and knits peppered with leather and lace rounded out our collection of basics, yoga wear + street-wear. Couldn't make it to the show? Don't worry anya has collated all the news just for you...

a selection of coverage from foureyes.com, thealist.co.nz and snapstarlive.com.

WE'AR have all been dreaming, creating, crafting and collaborating to bring you "Scout" our newest range for winter 2012 which debuted at New Zealand Fashion Festival on Monday.
To our soundtrack of  electro nomadic music our ten models stamped their little desert rider boot clad feet down the runway in a collection of knitwear, foxy goodness and dashes of sweetly sexy lace all topped with a cap + feather. Playful and WE'ARable.
Our ten looks were completed the way that you all complete your wardrobes with we'ar already. A mix of  everyday luxury and sumptuous fabrics. Amongst our new season kulu wrap, bulu boots and kiss shrug sat basics such as our much loved so plenty tank, polyana shorts and new romantic leggings. We didn't forget wardrobe must haves like our batwing sweater and deco skirt. Pieces that look just as great as throw on options in the weekend as they do on the runways of New Zealand Fashion Festival.
Layered knitwear, animal adorned fingers and little flashes of faux fur transported viewers from Auckland City to a beautiful and wild winter woodland. "Scout" was completed with foxes, bears and ice skating boots.
Expanding on the knits you loved so much from our range already we'ar created new knit pieces for men and women from soft web like lacey jumpers in shades of soft grey. Chunky knits in warming crimson to rough and ready thick over sized throws with flashes of coral.

If you loved our knitted socks from last season your in luck, they return for winter 2012 in both grey and black perfect for pairing back with gladiator boots, kabuki klompen or our desert rider boot.

WE'AR couldn't help but shake it up a little, amongst our ten delightful models WE'AR had our friends walking the runway. Dancer + singer and yogi Will C Barling and our very own yogini + fashionista + dancer and WE'AR staffer Maria.

saturday in the seduction saloon...
sooo I'm slightly biased because I will be dancing in In Flagrante here, but this really appeals to the performer in me! workshops, circus and burlesque running throughout the day into the eve, what a great way for people to express their creativity in a fun, crazy open environment. I'm keen to check out the barons of tang too - a mash-up of tango, rockabilly, metal and gypsy funk - yes please!

yoga and pilates workshops
looking forward to a chill out yoga session on the sunday after a full on weekend of splore fun... and our we'ar yogini pal katy carter will be teaching! there will also be meditation, Pilates and tai chi in the portavillion - a relaxing sanctuary to recharge the weary mind and body x x

the hooha hut
any excuse for dress-ups...

'From Friday to Sunday Splore magically transforms into the quasi-mystical cartoon-ironical, Island of Hooha. Expect rampaging wild beasties, nymphs and troupes of adventurers. To fit in with the locals bring costumery that enhances a feeling of anticipation for ribald good times and a personal bubbling up of exotica.'
there is even a head-dress workshop available. intriguing...

we'ar is also lucky to be spending time outdoors in such a beautiful environmental setting such as Tapapakanga national park - there is a pre-historic stonefield garden, and two Maori Pa sites, and boasts a pohutukawa fringed coastline. Read more about the history of the park here

from top left: maria in costume for in flagrante, barons of tang in their glory, katy carter yoga for a strong and beautiful yoga practice who will be teaching yoga at splore!, the splore venue (can it get any better) and hows this for a splore costume! if you want something a little less... baloony? try out some of our we'ar summer range here.

local legends on a global stage
dont get me wrong, i love an international act as much as the next person but there is so much awesome local flavor in one place its hard not to get excited! Scratch22 (also a member of ARC who happen to have their own store opposite ours on cross street in auckland) will be playing, @peace and the always amazing king kapisi. lots of love for the locals! one of the coolest things though is that a lot of creative connections will be forged at this event, and it will be even more interesting to see what comes out of the local creative community in a years time - new connections, new collaborations, new insights! gotta love splore!

arts and quirkyness combine!
i love the fact that splore is so much more than a music festival! whilst we are all looking forward to dancing away to miss badu you can also spend your days perusing art installations including work from the likes of cut collective and miranda brown. performance art more your thing? i was lucky enough to check out super kakkoi fighting kitten friends recently and totally reccomend going along to see it, especially if you like me have a thing for pokemon / japanese culture / cats / hilarity!

a reason to dress up!
my main wardrobe favorite for womad last year was my pleated kaftan dress, you can un button those floaty arms and rock it as a low backed halter neck! this year ill be we'aring my polkahontas dress with pride. haven't sorted your splore wardrobe? come visit us and snap up one of our dream sea dresses or lace body suits? don't have time before splore? find us in the market area and we'ar will sort you out! did you know that the kabuki klompen are perfect for dancing in all day even on the most uneven of ground?

from left: the beautiful miss badu, scratch 22's latest album, performance art cuteness, an example of arty goodness from the cut collective and local hero king kapisi

Love Thy Park : Saving our parks by having fun

Anya has a lifelong involvement in dance and drama, studying theatre and performing arts as a scholarship student in Europe. As well as dance, Anya is involved in triathlons, swimming, surfing and more recently the fight discipline of muay thai: she practices hatha yoga as a companion and balance to her other fitness exploits and relishes in the peace and calm she finds on the yoga mat. Anya refers to herself as a "beginner yogini" and is excited by the challenge and healing aspects that yoga brings to her . Anya also  volunteers her time to environmental and social causes.  Anya works at our cross street based HQ in Auckland, New Zealand.

There are few things that make me more excited than the prospect of  face painting and a picnic, but when you get to combine these things into helping out environment then it's kind of like winning the lottery of awesome past times + joyful helping!
Most countries have an established parks system, and New Zealand is no different; in Auckland where we'ar is based locals are literally spoiled for choice when it comes to public parks in both an urban and rural setting. One of my favourites is the Waitakere RangesRegional Park, which has some of the best bush walks, views and tramps in Auckland city New Zealand. Being publically funded means that they can have full time rangers and education programmes in place, but for extended community work + upkeep and special projects they rely on volunteers and fundraising.
Images from top: Kids Day festivities taking place, Arataki visitors center with its beautiful Maori Carvings, views from the center, Anya rocking her face paint in one of our old season we'ar empress tops- love the look? try our current season armadillo top x x x
I was lucky enough to volunteer for a "kids day" to fundraise for the Arataki Visitors centre that acts a  gateway for the Waitakere Ranges RegionalPark, an annual event that raises money for work done through the park including the beautiful traditional Maori carvings. For me that meant heading along one Sunday and painting native birds, plants, spiders and insects on little kids faces in between them learning about the environment, recycling, our native flora and fauna and chowing down on home made cakes and juice.  It was amazing to see the support that is given to the center from its local community.
By the end of the day I became a pro at painting lizards and butterflies but also was overwhelmed by the passion these little 4 - 8 year old children had for this park and preserving the beauty that was held there. Whilst painting pink butterflies on their faces, they told me all about their favourite birds, the recycling + compost programmes they had at home and their favourite walks through the native forests and picnic spots wherein. In a world where we are challenged by finding the balance between growth and environmental health it filled me with a lot of hope to hear that this next generation are so mindful about the precious gifts that the planet has for them.
When I started to write this I was going to urge everyone to head out and volunteer their time at their local park, but really the best thing you can do is take your children, your little cousins or your nieces and nephews outdoors. Get them passionate about  the world around them, the beauty of nature and the delicate balance this planet is in. They are our future and our hope!
anya @ we'ar
In New Zealand? Forest and Bird run programmes for children, whilst scouts, brownies and guides also get kids passionate about the environment and the outdoors. what about we'ar and our environment? learn about how we'ar are using plant dyes to help protect our waterways from environmental harm and why we'ar are so passionate about organics, ethical trade and our environment.

excited? check out the plant dye piecesin the online store.

volunteering your time painting faces for children? Anya recommends the linen ink raja shorts "i got paint all over them and they scrubbed up perfectly, not to mention that the range of movement freed me up for post face painting cartwheels on the grass with the little ones!"

By we'ar on 2012-02-07

Earlier this year, local artist and yogi Meghan Geliza got in touch with with we'ar creative director Jyoti looking for a little help so she could help others. Meghan wanted to take her art skills over to Thai/Burma refugee camps to teach art + creativity to refugee and migrant children.

Meghan was to follow in the footsteps of artists like Tanja Jade (formerly knowen as misery) and Peap Tarr all under the umbrella of the little lotus project run by Spinning Top who aim "to bring balance to vulnerable children". how could we'ar not offer a little helping hand?

So we'ar sent Meghan on her way, along with a bevvy of we'ar goodies to clothe her yogini self! Including such basics as our @ peace hoodie dress, tubelicious + our trusty and much loved hasu pants along with many hugs, encouragement and a few sneaky treats for the boys on the trip.

The following is a little of what Meghan was up to on the trip, and how she found her we'ar clothing...

Last December, I was fortunate enough to be part of Spinning Top’s Little Lotus project. A crew of us artists, photographers and videographers from around the world headed to the border of Thailand and Burma, where we’ve gotten to know some beautiful Burmese refugee children. We were stationed at two schools, SAW and Sky Blue, and there we taught art classes, painted murals, among other fun things. My part of the trip was made possible through the generosity of numerous people and We’ar. We’ar’s support was incredible and I was happy to rock some of their amazing gear on the road.

What I loved about traveling in We’ar clothes is how free I felt in them. The cuts are generous that it allowed so much movement, and the hoodies on dresses really came in handy for situations like curling up on long bus rides or guarding against 80 kph winds riding the back of a pick up. It was wash and wear sans the frump. The fabric felt delicious, and it was also airy enough for the tropics. The designs truly reflect how much traveling in this part of the world is a part of the founder’s life, which it is.

Yoga is a huge part of my routine back home, and it was awesome to have kept the practice in between project breaks. It provided some much-needed grounding amidst the din of everything that went on.
There was a lot that went down in Mae Sot and every day of the project was golden....
from top left: meghan rocks our tubelicious dress in plant dye blue, meghan gets to know her students, painting time! and one of the murals the little lotus project team has worked on is perused by an art critic/little lotus child! all photos were supplied to us c/o patrick shepherd.
intrigued? read more about Meghan and the project over at her blog. To find out more about why we'ar support people like Meghan read about our philosophy and culture on the wwww.wearyogaclothing.com website.
