We’d love to share with you our Spring Summer 17/18 collection 'the space in between'
Jyoti Morningstar, our eco-conscious entrepreneur has designed a vibrant Spring Summer collection ‘the space in between’ inspired by the Japanese concept of creative space.
“This collection emerged from a conversation with the artist Kazu Nakagawa, who explained how we create ‘Ma' in our work - which is Japanese for the something that occurs, or ‘just is’, between words in conversation, or notes in music. 'the space in between' is what is between objects, between layers of cloth, between bodies and between the moments of perceiving or experiencing any of this,”
In shooting 'the space in between', Jyoti worked alongside photographer Lukas Vritilek, with a creative eye to capture the space that surrounded the models and clothes. “We treated their bodies as occurrences or notes, and so the actuality of the space around and between, was created by their form and movement as a momentary poem.”
What emerged during the shoot was a sense of space so that the models appear as punctuation.
'the space in between' began as a colour palette that captured the sense of space the designer felt in specific places. There is a compelling soft depth that speaks of an archipelago with it’s sandy island rising out of a wild, warm ocean.
The colour ‘Sea Pine’ is the gravitational centre of the collection and features abundantly in onesies, dresses, shirts, pants, dresses and tees. Used alongside layers of wild sage and deepest emerald, this colour palette encourages inner calm and spaciousness. ‘Cloudburst’ is a vibrant grey representing the charged light through dreamy clouds at sea and the grey/blue ‘Tradewinds’ colour captures the edge of intensity that swells the sails to bring you home. ‘Sandshell’ is a moment of washed purity - a light, bright expression that holds us in its subtle warmth and finally ‘Lovestruck’ is the heart note of 'the space in between'. This colour is a peach tinged nude pink, which layers in gauzy textures of linen and eco-lover’s tencel, fine supima and organic jersey. Each colour note is “accompanied by an almost yearning that tugs at our embodiment. They draw us into what opens up in the space in between.”
The jumpsuit and parachute dresses take central focus this Spring/Summer with an emphasis on mixed volumes and feature sleeves. Parachute-like dresses in silky tencel and fine cupro crepe, create interesting new shapes. An abundance of playsuits toy with voluminous intent. The 100% bamboo trumpet sleeve jumpsuit gives the appearance of being cropped whilst almost reaching the knees, while the linen gauze jumpsuit features a wide leg and a high front contrasted by a deep linear V at the back. Trans-seasonal heroes are our solution for our changeable climate and many pieces layer effortlessly to enjoy for an extended season.
'the space in between' presents the concept of a ‘shared wardrobe’ with much of the men’s collection styled for a masculine edged minimalism. “The shapes arose out of the textiles and colours and seemed to almost create themselves as I inhabited each space presented by the colour palette.” The aesthetic is minimalist with the possibility of greater complexity emerging from layering the colours tone on tone.
