Mark is interested in developing an authentic yoga practice for the individual, based on the teachings of T. Krishnamacharya and his son TKV Desikachar, with whom he enjoyed a relationship for more than twenty years. Mark’s teachings clarify the profound passion and relevance of ancient wisdom to contemporary life.
Mark has taught yoga for over twenty years throughout the US, Asia, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand, and was the editor and contributor to TKV Desikachar’s book The Heart of Yoga. We are delighted to have this longtime friend of WE-AR in NZ to kick off our Sunrise Yoga Series!
Morgan and Carlotta (NowHere Yoga)
"NowHere Yoga is a project inspired by many things - by the freedom of expression found in Temporary Autonomous Zones like Burning Man and Nowhere Festivals, away from the layers of conditioning that modern urban cultures bequeath to us. By the return to engage with the natural world, of moving outside the comfortable concrete cocoons we have developed around us to experience more vividly and more truthfully what it means to be a terrestrial life form."
Morgan Palmer Hubbard and Carlotta Amargós are two thirds of NowHere Yoga (predominantly based in Spain). We are so lucky to have these two for a very special partner yoga session on 16th of Jan. Come with a buddy or make a new friend and try something new and fun with these two playful instructors!
"These last two years have been the most transformational of my life. Seeds that were planted years ago are ready for harvest. New seeds will be planted... I’m growing a forest. A community centered around a practice (because without a practice it’s just an ideology.) The ancient sages said that everything in the universe is energy and consciousness. Yin practice gives us the tools and the maps to explore this truth experientially. At the core of the philosophy is that we are nature being nature and through our practice we remember this truth, return to our center and harmonize with the world around us. Slowly, slowly the layers drop away and the soul is revealed. We remember who we are and why we are here".
Nik Robson is a freelance international yoga teacher originally from New Zealand. Nik is a practitioner and teacher of Yin Yoga and Traditional Tantric Hatha Yoga. He offers Yin and Hatha Yoga workshops, online Yoga classes, Yin Yoga teacher trainings and live music Yoga events at studios and festivals around the world. We are lucky to have him teach on the 23rd of January upon his arrival back to his homeland. He is also planning a nationwide @yinculture tour of studios and festivals this summer.
A valued friend of WE-AR, we are so happy to have Nikki's friendly face and inspiring practice as part of our line up. Nikki is a natural teacher who has been working with the human body for the last 18 years, her passion for yoga, movement and anatomical understanding shines through and is infectious to others.
Nikki has devised her own 'Ralston Method' which provides life enhancing practices, her physical asana practice combines the best elements of hatha, vinyasa, precision alignment and mindfulness teachings. Her classes are strong yet grounded, guiding her students to gain a deeper understanding of themselves, giving skilled yet simple cues from her deep understanding of the human body and subtle energies, creates a transformative experience and a practice that lasts a lifetime. Balanced by her delightful sense of humour that encourages students to reclaim the joy within their practice and life.
Taane Mete is an accomplished professional dancer, Taane has sustained his performing career for more than 36 years. In 2011, he stumbled upon Bikram yoga as a way of enhancing and supporting his dancing career and maintaining body and mind connection on and off the road.
In 2015, Taane did his first yoga training with Power Living in Wellington and began teaching at EastWest yoga studio in Ponsonby, Auckland. He has had the opportunity to teach Asana at Wanderlust in Taupo in 2015 and 2016. Taane is also a teacher at The Tropical Island; a yoga retreat in Aitutaki.
Taane values the calming effects that yoga provides, as well as the associated healing benefits and improvement of injuries in dance, while improving overall confidence and strength, both physically and mentally.
He draws inspiration from his Maori culture to infuse spirit and connection into his classes. Yoga has brought Taane closer to himself and those around him and we are excited to have him teach us on Waitangi Day this year.
Maria Munkowits is a very dear friend of WE-AR and is an amazing yoga teacher as well as a professional dancer. She has toured both locally and internationally in various performances and worked with some of New Zealand's leading contemporary dance companies.
Maria has developed Yoga Dance, now offered at Xtend Barre and Studio3 – a flowing practice combined with classic and dynamic yoga postures choreographed with invigorating musicality. She will close the 6-week series of SUNRISE YOGA this year with a beautiful flow to music with headsets from AudioVault.
